The Sound Assistant is the junior member of the sound crew. On a large scale production they will work with a Sound Recordist and a Boom Operator helping them record sound on location or in a studio. The Sound Assistant will help the sound recordist with the movement and assembly of equipment and the placing of microphones.

They will undertake basic maintenance and make sure all leads, plugs etc. are working. When a second boom is needed they will operate the pole to position the microphone in the correct position to get the best quality sound. They may assist the Sound Recordist by completing the forms detailing what has been recorded. They may assist the Boom Operator by making sure that cables do not get in the way of moving equipment.

On a smaller scale production there will be one Sound Assistant who assist the recordist, will rig mics and will operate the boom. On a very small production such as a documentary the sound recordist may work alone.

Although no formal academic qualifications are required it is helpful for Sound Assistants to have a good knowledge of physics and maths. Practical experience of wiring and soldering is also useful. Sound Assistants need to be fit as holding a boom pole above the head for periods of time requires physical stamina. To work as a Sound Assistant a driving licence is essential.
