Props are the portable objects used to dress a set or used as part of the action. The Props Assistant is the junior member of the props crew who look after the props during filming. The Props Buyer will be responsible for the buying of props. The Set Dresser will position the small objects that do not move but add to the authenticity and atmosphere of the set. On the studio floor or on location the props crew will be responsible for the safe keeping of the moving props and will ensure that the right prop is in the right position at the right time to ensure continuity between shots.
The props crew will be particularly responsible for hand props, those used by actors as part of the action, and may liaise closely with specialists (for example armourers if guns are being used, animal handlers if animals are included etc.). On larger productions there will be specialist Props Makers but on small productions simple hand props may be made by the props crew or the art department. The props crew are responsible for packing up the props at the end of the production and their storage or return to hire companies.
There are no formal qualifications required but art qualifications may be useful. Experience of making things is desirable. Attention to detail and organisational skills are essential.
