
The Makeup/Hair Assistant is a junior member of the makeup department. On a large scale production the Makeup Chief/Makeup Supervisor will have a team of assistants and may have a specialist hair dresser and/or wig maker working with them. On a small scale production they may work on their own.
The Makeup/Hair Assistant will assist with the purchase of supplies, keeping the makeup room clean and tidy, may be given responsibility for makeup and cleansing extras and some of the artistes. They may have to barber or cut and dress the extra's hair for period scenes. They may be asked to apply special fx like grazes, cuts and bruises. They may set and dress wigs. They may apply bald caps and facial hair to actors. They will work both in the makeup room and on set/location, standing by to touch up artistes makeup between takes.
FT2 trains people who already have basic makeup and hair qualifications to apply those skills in the specialist field of film and television production. Applicants for training in this area must already have achieved both NVQ level 2 in Beauty Therapy and NVQ level 2 in Hair Dressing. People wishing to work in this area must have good people and communication skills. To work as a Makeup/Hair Assistant it is essential to have a driving licence.
