Grips assist the camera crew with the use of specialised equipment designed for moving and elevating the camera during the shot. They lay tracks and operate the dolly (the moveable camera platform) to ensure smooth movement of the camera. They operate cranes when high shots are required. They assist the camera crew with the movement and assembly of camera equipment.
Grips need to be physically fit. Mechanical and/or construction experience and knowledge is useful. To work as a grip, a driving licence is essential.
Case studies given in this section are for grips who previously trained through the New Entrant Technical Training Scheme.
