When working with film the 2nd Camera Assistant (Clapper Loader) will be responsible for loading the film into the camera magazines and unloading the exposed film stock. They will operate the clapper board which provides a visual and audible identification for each shot to help the cutting room run sound and picture in sync. The 2nd Camera Assistant will make sure there is sufficient film stock for each days shooting, will label the film cans and fill in forms for the laboratories with details of what has been shot. They will recharge the camera batteries and help move and assemble the camera equipment. They will rig monitors so that the crew can view what is being filmed.
On a tape shoot the Camera Assistant will label tapes and make sure there are sufficient tapes available for each days recording. They will keep records of what has been recorded on each tape, will assist with the movement and assembly of camera equipment, will rig monitors and they will ensure that cables do not get in the way of camera movement.
The Camera Assistant and 2nd Camera Assistant are the junior member of the camera crew. On a large scale production they will be working with the Focus Puller, Camera Operator and Director of Photography (and the camera crew will often be assisted by Grips).
Although no formal academic qualifications are required it is helpful for Camera Assistants to have a good knowledge of physics and maths. Photographic experience is also useful and to work as a Camera Assistant a driving licence is essential.
